PALO ALTO – A burglar broke into an occupied home Wednesday night in Palo Alto, police said.

Burglaries of occupied homes are rare in the city, the Palo Alto Police Department said in a statement, adding that the last one was reported in November. A suspect in that case was arrested the same day.

Wednesday’s burglary occurred at a home in the 2600 block of Cowper Street. A resident in her 80s told police she went to sleep at 10 p.m. Wednesday and awoke at 8 a.m. Thursday to find her cellphone, tablet computer and purse had been stolen.

A houseguest in her 20s also slept through the burglary, police said.

The resident told police she believed she left the front door unlocked, but officers discovered pry marks indicating a burglar might have forced their way into the home. No suspect information or surveillance footage was available, according to police.

Police said most residential burglaries take place during the day, when homes are more likely to be unoccupied.
