A suspect in a weekend shooting that left one person dead near Santa Cruz was arrested Sunday afternoon.

The shooting occurred at a party on Saturday night in Boulder Creek, roughly 15 miles north of Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz County sheriff’s deputies responded at 10 p.m. to the 1000 block of Brimblecom Road, a heavily wooded residential area. Upon arrival at the scene, authorities found one person with a gunshot wound who later succumbed to their injuries. The victim, an 18-year-old male, will be identified once the next of kin is notified.

Dispatch audio from the incident described an individual in a puffy blue jacket and green helmet with a shotgun and backpack leaving the “large” party on a dirtbike. According to police, the suspect is a juvenile and their identity is not being released.

In a message sent to parents Sunday morning, San Lorenzo Valley Unified School District Superintendent Chris Schiermeyer said that “many” students know the shooter and victim. Neither attends his school district, Schiermeyer said.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family who senselessly lost a child at a young age and also to all of our students and families impacted by this tragic event,” wrote Schiermeyer.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
