The Wild West’s queen of the dark side is finally here with her most complete body of work yet, an EP titled “God Is Dead.”
Produced by Alex Aldi and Cass Dillon, “God Is Dead” throws convention out the window and replaces it with indulgence. In a world that still tries to sell us the idea of a perfect American dream, DEVORA, empress of the outlaws, flies off the rails in exposing the sinister parts of such a fantasy. The soulful singer offers us, instead, the skin-crawling side of life that is rebellion, hedonism and anarchy.
Leading up to this EP, DEVORA has released two singles,“God Is Dead” and “Wild West.” Both exemplify the highs and lows of a bandit on the run, with nothing to lose and everything to gain. Backed by electrifying guitars and blood-pumping synths, DEVORA’s voice emerges through the disruption to bring us to the deep end of the unknown. “God Is Dead” only paints the beginning—“I’ve been living so fast, driving through the badlands, laying down on train tracks, tryna feel a rush”—while “Wild West” tempts us with the burning question, “Do you wanna live before you die?”
The EP features a previously unreleased track “Bonesaw,” which DEVORA describes as “a night in a motel room gone wrong.” Following the themes of the EP, the song “opens with seemingly illusive pretty snapshots of an all-American day dream, but progressively turns morose and ends with a bonesaw left in the motel room sink.”
“A lot of my songs take place in motel rooms,” she continues. “There’s something really macabre and eerily temporary about a motel room where, for essentially 24 hours, you can be whoever you want to be in that room sealed and removed from the outside world… It’s like your own revolving set. A lot of serial killers have set up shop in motel rooms and I know I’ve definitely walked into some gnarly motel rooms where I’ve gotten hit with this feeling—like getting punched in the gut—where I’ve started to put the pieces together that something really messed up must have happened in this room… ‘Bonesaw’ is all of the above.”
If you’ve ever wanted to know what it’s like to venture to the dark side, DEVORA invites you into the backseat of her roaring corvette. But she must warn you, this journey is not for the faint of heart.
“God Is Dead” is out on streaming platforms January 27th. You can pre-save the EP here. See you in the wicked Wild West.
