Sunnyvale school is distinguished

Fourteen elementary schools in the Cupertino Union School District, including West Valley Elementary in Sunnyvale, were selected for the 2023 California Distinguished Schools Program earlier this month.

The California Distinguished Schools program recognizes schools for excellence in one of two categories: closing the achievement gap and achieving exceptional student performance. The California Department of Education uses multiple measures to identify eligible schools, including assessment results, chronic absenteeism, suspension rates and socioeconomic data.

“CUSD continues to prioritize rigorous instruction and social-emotional wellness of every student,” said Superintendent Stacy Yao in a statement. “Receiving this honor speaks volumes about the hard work and dedication that occurred to help our students grow even during the toughest of times.”
