HAYWARD (BCN) — A Hayward planning commissioner has been named to fill a City Council vacancy.

The City Council appointed Dan Goldstein, who came in third in the race for two council seats in the November election, at a special meeting Monday. The vote was 5-0, with one council member abstaining.

Goldstein, who served on the city’s planning commission for more than seven years, will fill a council vacancy created when Mark Salinas was elected mayor.

Goldstein also ran for the Hayward Unified School District board in 2016. He came in fourth in that election for three school board positions.

Goldstein, a 17-year Hayward resident, is a cybersecurity professional, an investor and a consultant. He consults for Voluntas, which provides management software systems to public schools.

Goldstein is on the board of the Hayward Education Foundation, which provides resources to teachers. He is also a member of the Hayward Rotary Club and takes part in the East Bay Area Amateur Radio Relay League, a group of amateur radio enthusiasts.

A total of 45 qualified candidates applied for the city council vacancy.
