Getting matching tattoos is a tradition as old as time. People get them for endless reasons, and with all different types of people whom they hold close. As cliché as they may seem, they are a pretty big commitment. Putting ink in your own skin is already a risk, knowing you might hate it in a year or two, but to get one that constantly reminds you of another person? You’re just asking for the universe to throw a wrench in that relationship. Just kidding! Matching tattoos are a sweet and heartfelt gesture, and there are few things two connected beings can do to represent the bond they see lasting forever.

As special as matching tattoos can be, there are a few that we (and probably you) have seen one too many times. You know, the sun & moon, the yin & yang, and the lock & key. Those ideas are nice—we’re not knocking down anyone who has them—but could they be a little bit more creative? We think so.

Matching tattoos are usually pretty simple—something like two identical symbols or two sides of the same coin. Your options may seem limited, but this concept can actually take shape in endless forms, especially when throwing your own niche interests into the mix. Instead of your standard matching puzzle pieces, why not opt for two partners-in-crime from your favorite movie? Or rare items from the video game you and your willing tattoo partner love playing together? These days, there are even trippier corresponding designs like negative space tattoos, or tattoos where you need the other person present to complete the image. We’re all for playing with the human body in different ways, and the more clever and outlandish the idea, the more we love it.

On that note, here is a selection of matching tattoos that venture in a different direction than your typical set of ink. Hey, even if you end up never talking to the person you got it with again, at least you can say it was still a cool idea.
