For the past four years, Kevin McCarthy has been minority leader of the US House of Representatives.
And with the Republican Party winning back the House, he is now looking to become the next speaker.
But the first three rounds of voting did not go his way on Tuesday. For the first time in 100 years, the election for House speaker has gone to multiple ballots.
Here’s a deeper look at McCarthy, a California native who was first elected to the House in 2006.
