Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is a 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Hurst/Olds Indianapolis 500 pace car edition convertible.
This muscle car was delivered to its first owner from Weidenbacher Oldsmobile in Decatur, Illinois in August 1972 with a window sticker price of $4,813.80. The sale includes a Protect-O-Plate, window sticker, an owner’s manual, booklets, build documentation, a pair of flags, and New York registration.
“As part of the restoration completed in 2010, the body was recoated in Cameo White with gold accent striping,” the listing states. “Exterior features include a scooped hood, Indianapolis 500 Official Pace Car livery from the 1972 race, H/O emblems, rocker moldings, sport mirror caps, “500 Festival” decals, and a dual exhaust system with trumpet-style outlets. The car was reportedly awarded 960/1000 points and 998/1000 points at concours-level events in Massachusetts and Illinois.”
It rides on factory 14-inch Super Stock III wheels with gold pockets, polished trim ring, and Goodyear Polyglas G70 tires.
The interior features black vinyl Strato front bucket seats, a matching rear bench seat and black carpeting. Woodgrain veneer on the dash, center console and door panels complement the black interior and amenities include air conditioning, Soft-Ray tinted glass, and an eight-track audio system with an AM push-button radio.
Under the scooped hood is a reportedly numbers-matching 455ci V8, and the listing states the engine has its original four-barrel carburetor, intake, exhaust manifolds, and distributor. The engine is paired with a console-shifted TH400 three-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels through the car’s original rear end.
This Hurst/Olds features power steering, a Rallye suspension package, and power front disc and rear brakes. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 86,691 miles, but the selling dealer states that the true mileage on the chassis is unknown.
