BERKELEY — Police have captured a suspect on Saturday after a fight, gunfire and foot chase in Berkeley a few blocks from UC Berkeley.
The incident began in Berkeley after police said they received a call of a fight in the 2400 block of Telegraph Avenue, which would be on Telegraph Avenue between Channing Way and Haste Street, police said Saturday.
Police received word of the incident at 2:17 a.m. on Saturday.
“A group got into a verbal argument with the suspect that ended up with the suspect punching a female in the throat,” the Berkeley Police Department reported in a post on the Nixle community channel.
The victims began to depart from the location of the incident, police said.
“As the victims were walking away the suspect fired one round into the air and the victims fled,” Berkeley police stated in the web post.
Police arrived in the vicinity of the incident and began to talk to the victims about the fight and the shooting.
“As officers were interviewing the victims another officer spotted the suspect trying to blend in with a crowd of people on Durant Avenue,” Berkeley police stated in the post.
The suspect fled as officers made an approach to apprehend the individual.
“The suspect fled from officers on foot,” police said.
Officers chased the suspect along Durant Avenue, Bowditch Street and then Channing Way. Police caught the suspect at the corner of Channing and Bowditch.
“The suspect was taken into custody and found to be in possession of a loaded pistol and narcotics packaged for sale,” Berkeley police stated.
