Citroen has received the “Green Hero” award from Electrifying.com for its Oli (all-ë) concept car. The Green Hero award recognizes companies that show a dedication and commitment to reducing the emissions of cars at every stage of life. Citroen’s Oli concept car uses 100% recycled materials and vehicle parts that can be reused or recycled throughout the car’s life.
“Citroen Oli breaks a cycle which has seen electric cars become more expensive, heavier and less efficient,” says Tom Barnard, Editor-in-Chief of Electrifying.com. “Oli uses less resources over its lifetime and is designed to last decades rather than being disposable. There are so many innovative features which just make sense and make you wonder why no one has thought of them before.”
The Citroen Oli has an all-electric powertrain and 40-kWh battery that can offer 248 miles of range because of its lightweight construction. A simple example of Citroen’s goal to keep Oli’s weight down is the use cardboard honeycomb on the hood and roof. Don’t fret about the use of cardboard in a car as the material is stronger than steel. The interior is largely spartan but maintains a modern fun and hip flavor. All these factors combine to keep the vehicle light with sustainable parts in a trendy package.
The judges for the Green Hero award examine how each manufacturer offering electric vehicles in the United Kingdom is developing production methods for carbon-neutral manufacturing, reducing the use of rare earth metals, and implementing the use of recycled and recyclable materials. Other factors taken into consideration are sustainable design, auditing of supply chains, and using more efficient methods for shipping and delivering EVs.
Citroen’s dedication to producing more eco-friendly vehicles is shown by advancing the use of recyclable materials and less complicated production methods to increase efficiency towards the goal of inexpensive zero-emissions vehicles. For example, the doors and seats have less components to improve production processes and lower weight. To further enhance Oli’s ecofriendly nature, its tires are estimated to last up to 310,000 miles thanks to a sustainable carcass and tread that can be renewed twice across its lifetime. Oli is also equipped with Vehicle-to-Grid capability to let owners sell energy back to the grid.
“Oli represents the next steps in Citroen’s e-mobility journey, showcasing just what’s possible with the clever use of materials and technology,” says Vincent Cobée, Citroen Global CEO. “For Citroen, the future isn’t about ever-bigger batteries, increased EV range and massive electric SUVs. Instead, we believe it’s time to think about how to do things differently, and better. Oli is a real-world representation of this philosophy, and crucially it aligns with our fundamental belief in vehicle affordability, accessibility and the circular economy.”
