A man was shot to death a couple hours before dawn Sunday in East Oakland.
The man was gunned down shortly after 5 a.m. on the 5800 block of E. 16th Street, according to the Oakland Police Department. Officers were called to the shooting after a Shot Spotter activation in the area.
The man died at the scene. His name has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
Officers found numerous shell casings in the street, police said. No arrests have been made, and a motive for the killing remains unclear.
The killing marks the 115th death investigated as a homicide by Oakland police so far this year. That compares with 129 killings the agency had investigated at this same time in 2021.
Another six homicides have been investigated by the California Highway Patrol this year within Oakland city limits.
A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest in the case. Anyone with information about the shooting can call 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950, or they can call or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
