A performance car manufacturer going against the grain and producing an SUV is a modern concept. The Porsche Cayenne helped change the market in the early 2000s and now you have SUV offering from Maserati, Aston Martin, and Ferrari. A performance car manufacturer producing an SUV makes sense. You have a greater market for luxury SUVs than two-seat performance cars and sometimes you have to make tough choices and alter your image to pay the rent.
Lamborghini has joined the field and produces the Urus but that isn’t their first SUV.
At the 1986 Brussels Motor Show Lamborghini introduced the LM002. It had a stronger resemblance to a Humvee than a Countach and featured a luxurious interior with room for six. Its target market was transportation for energy executives and royalty through the unforgiving desert landscape of the Middle East oil fields. It garnered the nickname “Rambo Lambo” when Sylvester Stallone was rumored to be an early adopter of the luxury SUV.
Production ran from 1986 to 1993 with approximately 300 examples manufactured and RM Sotheby’s is offering chassis number 279 at its upcoming Miami auction.
The 1991 Lamborghini LM002 offered by Sotheby’s was manufactured in June 1991 and was obtained by the Kuwait-based consignor in 2014. It currently has 8,931 km (5,549 miles) and was driven just 56 kilometers (35 miles) from 2014 to 2022.
This well maintained LM002 has extensive service records. In 2014 the exterior was repainted Rosso and the exhaust system was modified. A new clutch and a new flywheel were installed in March 2020.
Appropriately enough the well-appointed interior has ivory leather upholstery, brown carpeting, and wood-veneer door trim. Judging by the photos in the listing this LM002 is in pristine shape, befitting its low mileage and extensive maintenance history.
The LM002 was ahead of its time when it was introduced to the world 36 years ago and is now a footnote in Lamborghini’s history. For discerning shoppers of classic SUVs this 1991 Lamborghini LM002 is available at RM Sotheby’s Miami Beach auction on Saturday, December 10.
