ALAMEDA — A New York man suffered fatal injuries Thursday night when his vehicle crashed into a light pole after exiting the Webster Street Tube, authorities said.

The Alameda County Coroner’s Office identified him Friday as Nathan Stieber, 37.

Authorities said he was alone in his vehicle when he struck a light pole about 10:45 p.m. Thursday on Webster Street just outside the tube in Alameda.

He had to be extricated from the wreckage by firefighters. He was taken to a hospital suffering from major injuries and later died.

What caused him to crash is under investigation. Police have not said why Stieber, who is from New York City, was in the area.

The Webster Tube was closed Thursday night and again Friday morning while investigators gathered evidence.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Alameda police at 510-337-8586.
