DALY CITY — Several people were injured after a SamTrans bus crashed into multiple cars in a parking lot at the Serramonte Center late Friday morning, authorities said.

According to a statement from SamTrans, a bus collided with 16 vehicles around 11:50 a.m. in the south parking lot near the Target department store in the busy shopping center popular with holiday shoppers.

The statement added that multiple people were injured, four of whom were rushed to the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center. One of the hospitalized victims was listed in critical condition.

Details about the circumstances behind the crash were not immediately clear. At the scene multiple damaged cars were visible, and a mangled shopping cart was tangled in the front-right wheel well of the bus.

“As we work to gather information about the cause of this incident, our hearts go out to those affected,” reads the transit statement.

A tweet from the North (San Mateo) County Fire Authority confirmed that “multiple vehicles” were hit by a county bus, and that the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office has also been summoned to investigate. The fire agency estimated that police and emergency personnel will be on site for most of Friday afternoon to examine the scene.
