OAKLAND — A man suspected of brandishing a gun at Oakland police officers was arrested Sunday night after an hour-long standoff that shut down traffic in both directions on Interstate 880, authorities said.

No gun was found and the 49-year-old man was taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, according to police.

The incident began just before 10 p.m. Sunday when police said a man allegedly brandished a firearm at some officers driving by him in the area of 66th Avenue and Coliseum Way in East Oakland.

The man then fled on foot onto nearby I-880 and laid down in the center median between the north and southbound lanes, police said.

The California Highway Patrol shut down traffic in both directions between High Street and Hegenberger Road while police negotiated with the man, who initially was not compliant with their demands, authorities said.

After an hour of negotiations, the man surrendered and was taken into custody. The man declined medical treatment at the scene.

A search of the area failed to find a gun, authorities said.

Police were continuing to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 510-238-3426.
