At least 16 people were injured Thursday afternoon when seven vehicles crashed inside the Bay Bridge tunnel, though none of their injuries appeared serious, authorities said.
The crashes happened at about 12:40 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 near Treasure Island, closing multiple lanes and snarling Thanksgiving Day traffic, said Mark Andrews, a California Highway Patrol spokesman.
Two of the people injured were hospitalized, though their injuries appeared minor, Andrews said. All 16 people who were either taken to hospitals or treated at the scene were expected to recover, officials said.
The fire department had earlier said that 18 people were injured, and four of them had been transported to a hospital. However, they later issued revised figures.
All of the lanes were re-opened shortly after 2 p.m., Andrews said.
Details about what caused the pileup were not immediately known. The crashes remain under investigation, Andrews said.
