OAKLAND — In an unprovoked, random attack in one of the city’s busiest commercial areas, a 35-year-old man was stabbed Monday morning and a suspect was later arrested, authorities said.
The victim was in stable condition at a hospital recovering from a stab wound to his neck area, authorities said.
The stabbing happened about 11:20 a.m. Monday in the 3200 block of Lakeshore Avenue, a bustling area of different commercial businesses, restaurants and coffee shops.
Police said the victim was sitting down sipping a cup of coffee when a man approached him and without warning or provocation stabbed him at least once in the neck area. Authorities said it appears the two men did not know each other.
The suspect fled but with the help of witnesses police were able to spot him and pursue him to a few blocks away on Lake Park Avenue, where he was arrested. A small knife was recovered from him.
The suspect was taken to a hospital for psychiatric evaluation, authorities said.
