The Genesis X Convertible looks like a car from another planet, and definitely not something I would expect from a car company I largely associate with nice but drab offerings. I’m not alone in this sentiment and maybe the Korean automaker is attempting to venture towards bolder designs, as opposed to producing cars that blend in with the competition.

“Genesis started life by producing sedans mainly targeting business users,” said Chief Creative Officer, Luc Donckerwolke. “While creating a new, differentiated design DNA, we gradually increased the emotional appeal by applying this DNA to the SUV typology. Now, electric powertrains have given us the perfect scenario in which to enjoy nature, and propelled the brand to create vehicles with even greater emotional resonance.”

The long bonnet, short front overhang and long wheelbase are drawn rearwards and that combination gives the X Convertible a smoother essence. Hyundai states that, “The anti-wedge Parabolic Line emphasizes the regal character of the profile.” I agree with that sentiment and will add that it looks graceful like a swan.

Genesis engineers were attempting to develop an open-air theater feeling in the X Convertible and provide a greater sensory experience for the driver and passengers. The open roof design is intended to allow a direct connection with the surrounding environment. Building on that idea is the all-electric drivetrain for quiet motoring and a sound system developed by sound master Guk-il Yu to emphasize acoustic performance.

You never know if a concept car will make it to actual production and if it does it’s usually toned down to an easier package for mass consumption. I hope that the X Convertible in this form, or very similar, makes its way to a dealership near you. We have enough drab vehicles on the road, and it sounds like Genesis is trying to break away from the flock.

“Innovation is the catalyst to becoming more engaged with the environment around us,” said Donckerwolke. “We are in the process of transitioning Genesis into a company that will deliver products for customers to enjoy.”
