BERKELEY — Three groups of people concerned with street safety were set to gather Tuesday night for a vigil honoring a man killed last month while trying to cross a street in a wheelchair.
Williams Evans, 72, died hours after being hit by a dump truck driver at Bancroft Way and Shattuck Avenue on Oct. 20. The collision happened about 11:55 a.m. Evans died at a hospital about 3 1/2 hours later, police said.
According to police, the truck driver was going west on Bancroft Way and hit Evans in his wheelchair. The collision pinned Evans underneath and the driver stayed and cooperated with officers. Police have not made any arrests.
People from the groups Telegraph for People; Walk Bike Berkeley; and Senior and Disability Action were expected to be near the site where the fatal crash happened for Tuesday’s vigil. All three groups advocate to make the street space safer for pedestrians and those in wheelchairs.
The vigil starts at 5 p.m.
They are advocating to eliminate right-hand turns on red lights throughout the city; extending pedestrian crossing times and abolishing “beg” buttons that pedestrians must push to cross the street.
