Ranked teams

No. 1 Serra 21, St. Ignatius 7

Alex Atkins became the first Serra player in 40 years to intercept three passes in the same game, leading the Padres (9-0, 6-0 West Catholic Athletic League) to victory over St. Ignatius (3-6, 2-4). The last Padre with three picks in a game was former Major League Baseball star Gregg Jefferies in 1982, coach Patrick Walsh said. Atkins returned his interception in the third quarter 46 yards for a touchdown, putting Serra up 21-0. The visitors scored touchdowns in each of the first three quarters. A win next Saturday at home against Sacred Heart Cathedral would give Serra its first full undefeated regular season in the MaxPreps era that began in 2004. The Padres were 5-0 in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Seamus Gilmartin and Jayden Weber caught passes for Serra’s other two scores. SI broke up the shutout with under four minutes left in the game. “The defense was spectacular tonight,” Walsh said. “The defense is the strength of our team. We knew that coming into the season, and they’ve delivered.” — Mike Lefkow

No. 3 De La Salle 27, Amador Valley 7

Given that De La Salle had won the previous seven games between the teams by an average of 46 points, and none was closer than 35, the score at the end of the first quarter was eye-opening. Same with the halftime score. Amador Valley led 7-0 after one quarter and was tied 7-7 after two. Dominic Kelley got De La Salle back on track in the second half, scoring on runs of 70 and 23 yards in the third quarter and 75 yards in the fourth. De La Salle improved to 6-3. Amador Valley fell to 4-5. De La Salle closes the regular season Friday at Clayton Valley in a game that will likely determine which team will be a top-two seed in the North Coast Section Open/Division I bracket and which one will fall to three. The teams were tied at 3-0 atop the Rock Division standings coming in, but El Cerrito built a 20-0 lead during the first 10 minutes and never looked back. Gauchos coach Jacob Rincon said it was his team’s best game of the season. Quarterback Michael Vanhook got the scoring started with a 2-yard run, then Tony McAdoo scampered 55 yards to make it 14-0. Vanhook threw a 35-yard pass to Aaron Woodard to complete the scoring in the first period. Vanhook threw two TD passes, Daniel Harper scored on a 25-yard run and caught a TD pass, and Woodard returned a fumble 50 yards to the house for six more. Towers’ 45-yard pass to Caden Allard evened the score 7-7, and his 20-yard run in the second quarter gave the Monarchs a 14-7 lead. A 14-yard TD pass from Towers to Danny Scudero gave Mitty a 21-13 late in the first half. Valley answered with a TD just before halftime to pull even. After Steven Anaya blocked a field-goal try in the third quarter that would have given Valley the lead, Justice Toavalu scored on a 5-yard run to put Mitty in front for good. Raciti and athletic director Jim Keck were suspended for the last two regular-season games by Mt. Diablo Unified School District superintendent Dr. Adam Clark for beating Ygnacio Valley 84-0 a week ago. Clark felt the Falcons were guilty of piling on because of several excessive celebration penalties, a 2-point conversion attempt while leading 47-0 and keeping their starters in too long. Against Mt. Diablo, College Park held a slim 7-6 lead until quarterback Colby Taul threw a touchdown pass to Tony Keck with a minute left in the opening period.
