After nearly five years as a successful pop-up, Koolfi Creamery, the small-batch ice cream maker known for artisanal flavors like mango lassi and salted caramel studded with Mysore pak ghee fudge, has opened its first brick and mortar.

Koolfi Creamery & Cafe is now open at 599 MacArthur Blvd., in San Leandro, the city where married owners Priti Narayanan and Madhuri “Mads” Anji first started the business out of their 1940s bungalow back in 2018. Hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday-Sunday, with plans to expand soon.

For the soft opening, Koolfi is offering eight ice cream flavors, including Jamun Bananza, banana ice cream topped with gulab jamun, the fried dough balls soaked in cardamom and rose water syrup, in honor of Diwali. In the coming weeks, expect closer to 20 flavors plus South Indian coffee, affogatos, faloodas and sundaes. Don’t miss the famous dosa waffle cones made from fermented dosa batter and ground fenugreek seeds.

Koolfi’s ice creams start with Straus organic dairy or vegan coconut milk and are inspired by the sweets of head ice cream whiz Narayanan’s childhood. Narayanan left a career in civil engineering to pursue her love of dessert, coming up with flavors like Lotus & Rose, a lotus seed and rose ice cream topped with crushed pistachios and Kerala Bombay Butterscotch studded with crushed cashew toffee.
