Alright you primitive screwheads, listen up. You see this… this is my BOOMSTICK! And if you don’t continue reading this article I’m going to have to use it on ya. Groovy.
Now that we’ve got that out of the way, let’s talk about the genius that is the Evil Dead trilogy. Back in 1981, fledgling director Sam Raimi made the original “Evil Dead” on a shoestring budget of $350,000, with a completely unknown actor named Bruce Campbell in the lead and ended up creating one of the great masterpieces of horror.
The horror genre is saturated with low-budget films, but more often than not they end up feeling hokey and, if we’re being totally honest, not very scary. But they’re still fun—both to watch and to make—so horror-fans keep on consuming them despite the quality. “Evil Dead” caught everybody surprise, much like the creeping evil in the film, by being legitimately terrifying. The secret was the simplicity.
Due to the tight budget, Raimi had to get creative instead of building a big fancy monster. The brilliance is that we never really see the “evil” in the film, we just see its point of view as it creeps up on the unsuspecting college kids.
Of course, if it wasn’t for the Campbell hamming it up to the nth degree this might not have worked, but he was up for the task and the rest is history. Throughout the trilogy the horror elements get toned down and the comedy gets ratcheted up, but don’t think that means “Evil Dead 2” or “Army of Darkness” aren’t masterpieces onto themselves. “Army of Darkness” is one of the most infinitely quotable movies on Earth. how often have you found yourself saying, “Hail to the king, baby,” or “Gimme some sugar, baby.” Now that I think about it, Ash Williams sure does say baby a lot, doesn’t he?
If it weren’t for Raimi’s ingenuity and the hilarity of Campbell’s narration, these films likely would have been forgotten within weeks of them coming out. Instead they became the kind of horror institutions that we watch and re-watch constantly. As you can see in the gallery below, there are a ton of silly and creative tattoos celebrating the timeless series.
Before we leave you to enjoy the tattoos, if you choose to get an Evil Dead tattoo of your own, please make sure to take proper care of it as it heals. Otherwise your tattoo may go bad and you’ll have to lop it off. And as cool as it may look in the films, something tells me you don’t want to go the rest of your life with a chainsaw attached to your arm.
