RICHMOND — A 36-year-old man was shot Sunday afternoon at a homeless encampment, authorities said.

The man, who police said was unhoused, was struck in the abdomen. He was airlifted to a hospital, where he was in serious but stable condition after surgery, authorities said.

The man was found shot about 2;30 p.m. Sunday in the area of Richmond Parkway and Hensley Street by officers responding to a report of a man down, police said.

Police determined the man had been shot inside a city-sanctioned homeless encampment at Hensley and Castro streets, where it is believed he was living.

A motive for the shooting has not been determined yet. No suspects have been identified, Sgt. Aaron Pomeroy said.

Anyone with information about the shooting can contact the Richmond police tip line at 510-307-8177.
