The Indianapolis Colts will start Sam Ehlinger at quarterback for the remainder of the season, coach Frank Reich announced Monday.

Quarterback Matt Ryan, who started the Colts’ first seven games, has a Grade 2 separation of his shoulder, but Reich said the move isn’t being made because of injury.

“Right now the move is for Sam to be the starter for the rest of the season,” Reich said, according to the team’s website.

Ryan won’t practice this week and will be inactive for Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders. Nick Foles will back up Ehlinger.

Ryan, acquired by the Colts from the Atlanta Falcons in an offseason trade, has completed 203 of 297 pass attempts for 2,008 yards this season, but the 37-year-old player has thrown nine interceptions and has fumbled 11 times, losing three.

The Colts are 3-3-1 this season, including 1-3-1 against AFC South opponents.

Ehlinger, who is 24 and was drafted by the Colts in the sixth round of last year’s draft, has appeared in three NFL games but hasn’t thrown a pass during a regular-season game.
