Jeff Sutton guides us through his 1984 Porsche 944, reflecting on Porsche’s new direction of water-cooled and front-engine cars that were intended to replace the air-cooled boxer engines. The 944’s descendant, the 924, eschewed its Volkswagen and Audi bits to become a “true” Porsche thanks to a proprietary engine and wide-body styling. In typical Porsche fashion, the 944 would be marginally improved with more horsepower and even a Turbo model before evolving into the Porsche 968.
