A pedestrian died Friday night after he was struck by a driver while crossing lanes on Interstate 280 in San Jose, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP officers responded to calls of a person down on the freeway’s shoulder at 10:20 p.m. near I-280’s southbound Wolfe Road exit. They found a deceased man in the second lane from the right shoulder.

Officers spoke to a driver who said they struck the man as he ran into the lanes from the shoulder. Another driver said they struck the person’s body when it was down in the traffic lane. Both drivers remained on the scene and cooperated with authorities; neither was suspected to be impaired, the CHP said.

Later, CHP officials said they learned of a third driver who claimed to have struck the man’s body. Authorities did not offer a reason why they believed the person was running into traffic lanes.

Identification of the victim is pending notification of next of kin.
