OAKLAND — A fire Tuesday morning at a homeless camp in downtown Oakland spread to an adjacent Oakland Police Department parking lot, destroying three transportation vans, authorities said.
No injuries were reported.
The fire was reported about 3:42 a.m. Tuesday at the camp, which is on the sidewalk on the west side of Broadway underneath Interstate 880 between Fifth and Sixth streets.
The intense flames of the fire spread into a police parking lot that is also underneath the freeway, separated by a fence from the camp.
Before it could be put out, the fire destroyed three 15-passenger white colored transportation vans, authorities said. The vans, worth more than $100,000, were used for a variety of purposes, including by the Police Activities League program.
Firefighters remained on the scene until after 5 a.m.
Fire officials said no one in the camp was displaced.
The cause is under investigation, officials said.
