It was only three weeks ago that Ford gave us a first glimpse of the 2024 Mustang. Now we are treated to a reveal of the first new-gen Mustang race car. Called the Mustang GT Supercar, it has been unveiled at Mount Panorama in Australia in anticipation of this weekend’s Bathurst 1000.

“It is fantastic to be able to show, for the very first time globally, the seventh-generation Mustang in racing form,” says the Global Director of Ford Performance Motorsports, Mark Rushbrook. “The reveal of the Mustang Supercar is the first of many, with Mustang to race in GT3, GT4, NASCAR and NHRA competition globally.”

The Mustang GT Supercar features a 600+-horsepower Coyote that Ford claims is “more closely aligned with its road-going brethren than ever before,” though Motor Trend says that the engine has been bumped to 5.4 liters per the current Supercars Gen 3 rules. The periodical also reports that the body is over five inches longer than stock thanks to the front splitter and rear wing.

The Mustang has been developed by Dick Johnson Racing, Ford’s homologation team, in conjunction with Ford Performance. In addition to Dick Johnson Racing, teams racing the Mustang GT Supercar under the official Ford banner include Tickford Racing, Grove Racing, Blanchard Racing Team and Walkinshaw Andretti United, the latter being new to the fold.

Dick Johnson, who’s marking the milestone of 1000 races this weekend, is driving the Mustang in practice the first time today. Qualifying for the Bathurst 1000 is on Friday, with the 1000-kilometer race happening on Sunday, October 9th.

“We’re very proud to be showing the world our new Mustang Supercar, and what better place to do it than at the Great Race here at Mount Panorama,” says the president and CEO of Ford Australia and New Zealand, Andrew Birkic. “It’s a special moment to be able to uncover this car in front of passionate Ford fans, alongside all of our Supercars drivers. It’s very fitting that Dick will take the car for its first laps this afternoon. He’s a legend of the sport, and an incredible ambassador for Ford.”
