The Heritage Theatre’s 2022-23 season opens and closes with an ’80s vibe, with a Celtic Christmas, Southern rock, an outlaw country tribute and some a cappella vocals in between.
Big Head Todd and the Monsters kick things off on Nov. 6. The Colorado quartet made their independent debut, “Another Mayberry,” in 1989 and went platinum with “Sister Sweetly” in 1993. “Beautiful World,” released in 1997, yielded the cover of “Boom Boom” featuring John Lee Hooker, which served as the theme to “NCIS: New Orleans.”
The band is made up of Todd Park Mohr on vocals, guitar, keys, sax and harmonica; Brian Nevin on drums and percussion; Rob Squires on bass and vocals; and Jeremy Lawton on guitar, keys, vocals and steel guitar.
Christmas with the Celts hits the Heritage stage on Dec. 9 for a family-friendly show featuring ancient Irish Christmas carols and lively Irish dance to contemporary songs with Irish instrumentation, including “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas,” “White Christmas” and John Lennon’s “Happy Christmas.”
The Heritage rolls into the new year with Southern rockers The Marshall Tucker Band on Jan. 28. Formed in Spartanburg, SC, in 1972, the band named itself after a blind piano tuner after whose name they found inscribed on a key to their original rehearsal space. The band’s music catalog, consisting of more than 20 studio albums and a score of live releases, includes hits like “Heard It in a Love Song” and “Can’t You See.”
Co-founded by Toy Caldwell and Doug Gray, who’s been fronting the band since the beginning, current members of the Marshall Tucker Band include drummer B.B. Borden, bassist/vocalist Ryan Ware, keyboardist/saxophonist/flautist/vocalist Marcus James Henderson, guitarist/vocalist Chris Hicks and guitarist/ vocalist Rick Willis.
The Highwaymen Show rides into the theater on Feb. 25 to pay tribute to country superstars Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Kris Kristofferson. Founded by Gray Sartin, who pays tribute to Johnny Cash, the Highwaymen show is made up of musicians that Sartin has worked with for decades: North Carolina native Greg Bauman as Kris Kristofferson, Georgia native Tyson Halford as Willie Nelson and Tennessee native Stefan Superti as Waylon Jennings.
A cappella group Voctave brings its vocals to the stage on March 24. The group’s latest album, “The Spirit of the Season, Deluxe Edition,” reached No. 6 on the Billboard charts. Formed in 2015 by producer and arranger Jamey Ray, the 11 members of Voctave hail from Central Florida.
The season wraps up on April 27 with Ladies Night featuring Taylor Dayne and Sheena Easton. Between them, the two pop vocalists have nine Grammy Award nominations, two Grammy Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, one American Music Award, six platinum albums, five gold albums, 39 Billboard top 20 singles and 11 Billboard No. 1 singles.
With a career spanning three decades, Taylor’s groundbreaking debut single “Tell It To My Heart” turned her into an overnight international star in 1987. She followed her smash hit with 17 Top 20 singles.
Easton has won two Grammys and is the first—and still the only—artist to have top five records on five major Billboard charts. Her hits range from “Morning Train: 9 to 5” to the James Bond movie title song “For Your Eyes Only.”
