Since their inception some 70 years ago, video games have come a long way. Still, though, many people can’t seem to pinpoint exactly what it is that makes them so widely loved and celebrated. The answer seems to be simple: they’re purely fun, graphically engaging, and they offer us challenging stimulation in the comfort of our home. But it’s more than just that – while providing us an escape from the world, they simultaneously interact with our real lives when playing, and give us invaluable memories and experiences that we take with us afterward.
The term “video game” includes all kinds of digital games, from classic Mario games to the most revolutionary VR. There is some debate about what constitutes the first ever video game – some might say it was the mathematical strategy game Nim, or Higinbotham’s Tennis for Two using an analog computer and oscilloscope. Spacewar!, developed by MIT students in 1961, was one of the first games to be widely distributed behind a single exhibition system. From there, Atari released its first console, the Atari 2600, which popularized games like Space Invaders, Pac-Man and Donkey Kong.
Fast forward a few years, and Nintendo consoles such as the NES and Game Boy broke onto the scene, bringing to life some of the most legendary series to date, from Super Mario Bros to The Legend of Zelda. Looking at the big picture, we’ve gone from playing old-school games at arcades to being able to download games on our PCs from websites like Steam, and Esports teams as respected organizations have pervaded the media landscape in recent years.
The quality of entertainment has exploded across all mediums in the past several years, and video games are not left out of the question. While back in the day, video games served as simple entertainment to pass time, they now provide players with an entire immersive experience. With unmatched design and storytelling, new video games are a testament to our generation’s boundary-pushing technology and creativity.
Even with all the advancements made, people still hold video games in a different light of reverence than films or books – why is that? As the mastery and impact of video games expands far beyond what was previously imagined, perhaps the medium will reach a point where it is fully embraced as a legitimate arm form to be respected and contested with, rather than a guilty pleasure to be played in secret.
Nowadays, there is truly a game for everybody – whether you’re into strategy and combat, role-playing or simulation. And despite what some may think, video games come with a plethora of emotional and social rewards; research has shown that playing games improves problem-solving skills, teamwork, and contributes to stress relief.
