SALA Festival

The South Asian Literature and Art Festival (SALA) returns to Montalvo Arts Center Oct. 29-30, featuring panels and conversations that examine and celebrate a wide variety of points of view around a certain theme.

This year’s event, presented by ArtForum SF, focuses on a theme of “Humanity” by examining how the world tends to put people in boxes, categorizing and generalizing communities of different color, class, gender and caste. Audiences can participate in discussions with authors of South Asian descent, some of whom will be selling and signing their books

The festival also features a marketplace, children’s craft activities, dance, music, poetry and painting. Food will be available for purchase, and a bar will offer beer, wine and soda.

The festival runs noon-6:30 p.m. both days at Montalvo, 15400 Montalvo Road, Saratoga. Single-day tickets are $30 and weekend passes are $50 at https://montalvoarts.org/experience/community-events/sala.

Supes get fired up

The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 13 took steps to bolster fire prevention and mitigation efforts.

The board directed county staff to identify funding necessary to: develop and implement an aerial fire detection using drones; upgrade training for the county’s Central Fire District personnel; and pursue opportunities to step up fuel reduction efforts in the county.

The board in April directed the district to expand its Pre-Fire Management and Wildfire Resilience Program, including the addition of a fuels crew dedicated to clearing brush and vegetation along evacuation routes and roads to reduce wildfire ignitions and spread.

The district’s boundaries include Cupertino, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno and a portion of Saratoga and unincorporated lands in western Santa Clara County, an area largely contained in Supervisor Joseph Simitian’s District 5.
