Newark Memorial volleyball player Malia Navarro is the Bay Area News Group’s girls high school athlete of the week for Sept. 4-10 after she received 9,596 votes (51.33%) by the 5 p.m. deadline Wednesday.
Navarro finished ahead of Castro Valley water polo player Isabelle Nicole, who finished second with 4,943 votes (24.03%).
St. Francis volleyball player player Havannah Hoeft finished third.
Navarro played in four sets and put up some impressive statistics against Moreau Catholic. In the attacking category she had 14 kills, and as a server, the junior had an ace. 18 digs rounded out Navarro’s great day in a 3-1 win.
