Spy satellite talk
The Sunnyvale Heritage Park Museum is hosting a Sept. 26 talk by Ricky Deutsch, who worked as operations manager in the 1970s for the Hexagon program, the most successful space spy satellite program of the Cold War era. Deutsch generated mission-critical commands to be sent to the satellite from the Sunnyvale “Blue Cube” and was awarded a Commendation Medal for his support of the program.
President Dwight D. Eisenhower initiated the Hexagon program in order to check treaty compliance by the Soviet Union and others. Guided by the National Reconnaissance Office, the CIA and the Air Force cooperated to use film in satellites for intelligence gathering. The film with images of military, industrial and agricultural sites was released by parachutes and collected by aircraft.
Deutsch’s talk is set for 7 p.m. at the museum, 570 E. Remington Drive. For more information, call 408-749-0220 or visit heritageparkmuseum.org.
