Week 2 of the high school football season begins Thursday night with about a dozen games involving local teams.

But the new week really heats up Friday.

The Serra Padres will hit the road again, this time to Concord, for a second heavyweight matchup in as many games. Last week, the Padres held off Folsom. Friday, they take on De La Salle.

“I have no one to blame but myself,” coach Patrick Walsh said about the back-to-back road games against Folsom and DLS to open the 2022 season. “I take full accountability for what’s happening to our team.”

Top Week 2 matchups

Thursday

Hollister (1-0) at No. 6 Wilcox (1-0), 7 p.m.: It might be a new year, but Paul Rosa’s Wilcox Chargers showed they have the same old (and effective) veer offense.  Against Valley Christian last week, halfback Andrew Palacios ran for 133 yards and two scores as the team combined to run for 275 yards. Armand Johnson ran for 68 and threw for 52 in an uber-efficient performance. They’ll play against a team the Chargers have traditionally struggled against. Hollister has an 8-5-1 record in the last 14 matchups between the teams. Formerly known as San Benito, Hollister wiped out Oak Grove 28-0 on Saturday. The Haybalers are in the midst of three consecutive non-Friday games to start their year, with the team playing host to Valley Christian next Thursday. — Joseph Dycus

Friday

No. 2 Serra (1-0) at No. 1 De La Salle (1-0), ESPNU, 8 p.m.: The top spot in the Bay Area News Group rankings and bragging rights between longtime friends and coaches — Serra’s Patrick Walsh and De La Salle’s Justin Alumbaugh — will be on the line when the Bay Area powerhouses meet in a nationally-televised game in Concord. Serra represented Northern California in the Open Division state championship game last season, a spot normally ticketed for De La Salle, and then opened this season last week with a 17-12 victory on the road over Folsom, another NorCal heavyweight. Danny Niu (98 yards) and Jabari Mann (63 yards, one TD) led a Serra ground attack last week that totaled 281 yards against Folsom — mostly out of a double-wing, bunch formation. Walsh doesn’t think that scheme will work as effectively against De La Salle, his high school alma mater. “We’re going to have to get better in other areas,” Walsh said. Charles Greer ran for 134 yards and two TDs and Derrick Blanche ran for 77 yards and a TD last week to help DLS open its season with a 36-20 victory over Monterey Trail-Elk Grove. — Darren Sabedra

Monterey Trail-Elk Grove (0-2) at No. 3 St. Francis (1-0), 7 p.m.: St. Francis will be looking for its second straight win against a Sac-Joaquin Section opponent when the Lancers play host to the host the Mustangs. St. Francis opened its season by beating Central-Catholic Modesto 35-28 last week. Despite an 0-2 start, Monterey Trail is ranked No. 14 in Northern California by NorCalPreps. The Mustangs have lost to Folsom and De La Salle. Monterey Trail is mostly a running team. Big question is whether Ali Collier, the team’s leading rusher last year, will be available. He was knocked out of the De La Salle game in the first quarter after a hit to the head. The Mustangs still gained 190 yards on the ground behind seniors Jervin Navarro and Daelin Ellis. The passing game has been shakey with QB Vince Arcuri having already thrown four interceptions. The Lancers have a solid QB in senior Matt Dougherty Jr., who was 10 of 15 for 201 yards and three TDs against Central Catholic. Andrew Adkison and Riley Long each caught five passes. Running backs Keala Keanaaina and Kamau Julien combined for 176 yards, splitting that total right down the middle. — Mike Lefkow

No. 7 Bellarmine (0-1) at No. 9 McClymonds (0-0), 7:30 p.m.: Bellarmine played what seemed like two games in its matchup last week against Menlo-Atherton. After blitzing the Bears to the tune of a 20-0 lead in the second quarter, Jurrion Dickey pushed M-A forward to a 48-34 win. Jalal Beauchman’s Bellarmine team won’t have much respite from the tough loss. Halfback Ben Pfaff and defensive lineman Jae’von Reels will need to rebound quickly if they want to get their first win of the year Friday. McClymonds, playing its first game of the year, is a reigning state champ. HB Javian Thomas and DT Malik Richardson are as good as their Bellarmine counterparts and should be raring to go. — Joseph Dycus

Del Oro-Loomis (2-0) at No. 8 Clayton Valley Charter (0-1), 7 p.m.: With a new quarterback and new offense, the Clayton Valley will receive a mulligan for its season-opening 21-14 loss to a very good Salinas team last week. The Ugly Eagles had almost 400 yards of offense and twice charged inside the Salinas 20 in the fourth quarter, but it failed to score. Del Oro is 2-0 and has won both games easily, but the Ugly Eagles will be the toughest opponent the Golden Eagles have faced. Clayton Valley coach Tim Murphy is still debating whether Pittsburg transfer Christian Aguilar or junior Mason Lovett will be the No. 1 quarterback. Last week they split snaps for three quarters, but Aguilar took over in the fourth. Del Oro has fumbled four times, and lost two, in its first two games. The Golden Eagles are also playing two quarterbacks, though junior Caden Pinnick might have the edge with three TD passes in those contests. — Mike Lefkow

No. 12 Campolindo (1-0) at Aptos (1-0), 7:30 p.m.: One of the most stunning results of the 2021 season unfolded in Moraga last September when Aptos routed host Campolindo 49-0. “I can confirm it was the right score,” longtime Campo coach Kevin Macy said after the game. Macy went on to lead his young team to the North Coast Section Division II title and a spot in a NorCal regional. Aptos would go on to an 8-2 season that ended with a 56-28 loss to top seed St. Francis in the Central Coast Section Division I playoffs. The score was tied 28-28 after three quarters. If Campo is to flip the script Friday, it’ll have to stop Aptos’ vaunted Wing-T mastered by its longtime coach Randy Blankenship. Aptos opened its season last week with a 39-29 win over Oakdale. Campo beat Moreau Catholic 28-17 last week behind 162 yards and two TDs passing from Dashiell Weaver and 80 yards and a TD receiving from Robbie Mascheroni. — Darren Sabedra

Vintage-Napa (0-1) at No. 18 Antioch (1-0), 7 p.m.: This might be more of a statement game for Antioch than last week’s shocking 58-28 rout of Monte Vista. Are they really this good? The Panthers led 30-0 at the half. They had 552 yards of offense. Pittsburg transfer Charles Brown Jr. ran for 289 yards and three touchdowns. Elijah Stingley had 110 yards and one score. Isaiah Pino scored two touchdowns on the ground. Think about that running game Antioch unleashed. Two speedsters and Pino, who goes 6-foot-2, 250. Senior QB Gino Marble was 7 of 9 for 70 yards and a TD. Vintage will be a big contrast to Monte Vista. Last week the Mustangs mostly threw the ball, managing 58 yards rushing. Vintage, which lost 41-7 to San Ramon Valley while playing at home, completed one pass for 5 yards. Two if you consider that one pass was intercepted. This is the home opener for the Panthers, and there certainly will be some excitement. — Mike Lefkow

Lincoln-San Jose (1-0) at San Jose (0-1), 7 p.m.: The traditional Big Bone Game between San Jose’s oldest public high schools will be held on Labor Day weekend for the second consecutive year. Under first-year coach Prashant Kumar, San Jose put up yards and points in its 39-20 season-opening loss against Marina. Mike Guzman ran for 139 yards and linebacker Bryan Esparza had 14 tackles. Lincoln played a heart-stopper against Leigh, with quarterback Tayden Phillips winning the 20-16 game with two seconds left on a quarterback scramble. This year’s game may not be played on Thanksgiving week, but that won’t make it any less special. San Jose may have not won the Bone in 24 years, but coach Kumar says, “The team really believes we have a legit chance of winning the Big Bone this year.” — Joseph Dycus

Archbishop Mitty (1-0) at Mountain View (1-0), 7 p.m.: Both teams won season openers last week as Mitty matched its win total from 2021 with a 29-7 victory over Palma and Mountain View defeated The King’s Academy 35-20. Mitty’s Wills Towers threw for 245 yards on 13-of-18 passing and three touchdowns against Palma. Mountain View’s Kevin Conway passed for 172 yards and two TDs against TKA. Mitty’s only win last season came at the expense of Mountain View, 35-34. — Darren Sabedra
