Offering a bold reimagining of the classic Squid knife, CRKT releases the Squid II, which includes noteworthy upgrades. As a result, the new Squid II melds the usability of an EDC folder with the attention to detail of a high-end custom. However, it is a limited edition run of 500, so you might want to get while the getting is good.
The CRKT Squid II
Made in Italy, the Squid II features several refinements and upgrades from the original. With an overall length of 6.97 inches, it is larger than the original. With exquisite machining and a rounded spine, the Squid II has refinement and comfort not seen in the Squid family. Likewise, the slightly rounded Micarta scales provide hand-filling ergonomics for comfortable extended use.
The 2.68-inch blade features premium Böhler M390 construction, which offers excellent edge retention and wear resistance. The .15-inch-thick stock provides an extra level of strength to the little workhorse. However, the high flat grind ensures a keen edge, ideal for slicing tasks.
The blade rides into lockup on CRKT’s IKBS bearing pivot system, with a titanium pivot ring, for smooth, fast blade deployment. Likewise, it features two blade deployment methods, thumb stud, and flipper. Once open, a liner lock holds the blade in lockup, which is a first for the Squid line.
The titanium pivot ring is set off nicely by the titanium backspacer with an elongated lanyard hole. At 4.8-ounces and a closed length of 4.25-inches, the Squid II has little footprint in the pocket and is held in place via a deep carry pocket clip. However, the pocket clip is not reversible and is available in right-hand tip-up carry only.
“The Squid™ II is far and away one of the finest knives we’ve ever produced,” said Doug Flagg, VP of Marketing & Innovation for CRKT. “This knife combines decades of design experience with the aspirations of what we’re trying to achieve as a brand and we’re confident it’s a knife that will stand the test of time.”
Editor’s Note:
As I mentioned in the lead, this is a limited edition run of only 500. And knowing CRKT as I do, I don’t expect them to last long. Although it is higher priced than the original Squid, keep in mind its higher-end construction and materials. Not to mention the fact that it is a limited run. That all adds up to an investment that will last you a very long time and will typically only appreciate.
