EL GRANADA — A two-car crash Wednesday closed a section of Highway 1 at the Half Moon Bay Airport and sent three people to the hospital with serious injuries.

The crash was reported at 4:15 p.m. in El Granada — a village in northern San Mateo County. Witnesses said a man driving an SUV north on Highway 1 swerved off the road, overcorrected and then veered into oncoming traffic, said California Highway Patrol Officer David LaRock. The SUV collided with a sedan.

The driver of the SUV, his male passenger, and the female driver of the sedan all were taken to Stanford Hospital with major injuries. At least one person was airlifted from the scene.

Authorities suspect the driver of the SUV was impaired by alcohol or drugs, and are investigating the crash as a DUI, LaRock said.

Highway 1 was closed in both directions following the crash, but reopened shortly before 8 p.m.
