Oakland should invest
in keeping city clean

My husband and I went to a wedding in Oakland last weekend and stayed at the Moxy hotel downtown, which we enjoyed. However, we were dismayed at all the trash in the gutters up and down the streets, especially the day after Frist Friday.

I was wondering why the city of Oakland doesn’t pay it’s workers to clean the gutters of the streets, especially in the business areas.

Once you see how nice that looks, perhaps you can help the homeless clean their areas up by supplying trash cans and outdoor toilets and servicing them frequently.

Could Alameda become
Venice by the bay?

Global warming is upon us. Mother Earth is angry.

July’s Supermoon tide came within feet of Harbor Bay homes. Nearby roads flooded. Yet the night was calm. With typical 35 mph bay gusts and choppy seas, the outcome along the waterfront trail could have been ugly. Think muck, debris – flooded foundations. Failure to prepare now could well mean hundreds of homes and streets eventually flooded. Imagine Alameda – Venice by the Bay in San Francisco – touted worldwide. We’d either be a mockery or a world-renowned tourist destination.

Malice in GOP speech
seems to be endless

Whenever I read words or ideas spoken by Donald Trump, Ron DeSantis, Ted Cruz, Greg Abbott, Mitch McConnell, the NRA, their supporters (the list goes on ad nauseam), and whenever I see the malevolent actions of Trump’s BFF Vladimir Putin and other dictators whom Trump likes, I remember an old radio program I heard growing up. The crime stopper in the program said: “Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows!” This was accompanied by an ominous laugh.

In all the years that I have been on this planet, I have never seen nor heard such evil, mean-spirited rhetoric from so many who want to hold on to power, or who have a yellow streak for a spine, or who are spitefully against everything good the Democrats are trying to do for all Americans.

One wonders when it will all end. I guess only Almighty God and The Shadow know.

Demand that Congress
protect abortion rights

Abortion rights are being stripped away from women, and it should be considered a national emergency.

One in three women get sexually assaulted within their lifetime, and one in every six is expected to be a victim of rape. Approximately 25% of women will have an abortion in their lifetime. As a woman myself, I have grown up expecting there to be a possibility of having an unwanted pregnancy because of those realities. I am scared for myself and every single person that will be affected by state-aide abortion bans.

So I am asking that you call your senators and urge them to support legislation that would protect abortion access, like the Women’s Health Protection Act & the Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act, because this fight is for all of us.

Federal government does
give refugees assistance

While I understand the writer’s concern for her friend (“Immigrant parolee deserves Biden’s help”, Page A6, Aug. 9), it is inaccurate to say that the U.S. government does not provide assistance to refugees.

A cursory Google search will reveal that under the auspices of the government’s Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), several agencies, including state ones, are shown as resources for refugees to access cash and other services to aid in their resettlement in the United States.

Please assist in stemming misinformation from being spread.

Biden’s wins pale
compared to Trump’s

Re: “Summer successes give Biden a chance to seize the momentum,” Page A7, Aug. 9.

Here’s what Charles Blow calls a Trump administration “disaster”: the economy was strong, markets were up, inflation was under control, gas prices were low, unauthorized border crossings were down, crime was lower, NATO allies were stepping up to pay their own way, China was backing off its imperialism somewhat, and Islamic nations in the Middle East negotiated treaties with Israel. Maybe it was disastrous for his class, the self-styled elite that vacations on Martha’s Vineyard or in the Hamptons. More and better things got done for us proles by ignoring that class, thus demonstrating their irrelevance.

Many of us don’t consider Joe Biden successful just because some of his administration’s employment and consumer price disasters have abated somewhat. Trump was shockingly boastful, but at least he could back it up.
