One person died and another was seriously injured in San Jose when their vehicle overturned on Highway 87 and then was hit by at least two other vehicles.

The crash was reported to the California Highway Patrol around 10:30 p.m. Friday on the northbound highway south of Curtner Avenue.

“It struck the guardrail edge and the edge of the sound wall, which caused the vehicle to overturn and come back into the lanes of northbound 87,” said Ross Lee, a CHP spokesperson. “And then it was struck again by at least two other vehicles.”

An 18-year-old passenger in the front seat was pronounced dead at the scene. A rear-seat passenger was taken to the hospital with major injuries after being ejected from the vehicle. Law enforcement was not immediately able to provide the injury status of the driver or other people involved involved in the crash.

Lee said the driver was traveling in an Acura at a “high rate of speed.” He added that drugs or alcohol are not considered to be a factor in this crash.
