Friends and acquaintances have so far raised more than $20,100 for the family of Maricarmen Leon, a 27-year-old killed by a suspected DUI driver on July 30 in Walnut Creek.
The Discovery Bay woman was struck outside a bar at 1:50 a.m. at North and Pine streets by a 28-year-old Concord woman who was driving a pickup truck. The driver, Brianna Day, who was later arrested, also hit Leon’s friend causing major injuries before crashing into a cement pillar.
Leon worked as a phlebotomist at Kaiser Permanente in Walnut Creek and “was an amazing daughter, sister, cousin, and friend,” according to Alexia Larios, who created the page on behalf of her sister Janet Leon.
“She had an amazing spirit with a huge heart, cherishing everyone who entered her life.. constantly smiling and laughing. She was following her dreams at Kaiser as a phlebotomist, where she stood out as a hard worker who always gave her all,” she wrote on the GoFundMe page.
“You would often find her living her life to the fullest.. out with friends, traveling, and always ready for her next adventure. Carmen touched the lives of so many, she will be missed beyond words,” she added.
Larios said the money raised will help the family cover funeral costs and “ease the pain of losing such a beloved family member.”
