OAKLAND — The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged an off-duty San Francisco Fire Department firefighter Monday with attempted murder in connection with a weekend injury shooting.
Oakland police responded to a report of a shooting victim around 6:30 p.m., Sunday near 30th and Chestnut streets in West Oakland before later learning that a 45-year-old man had been shot at 1:53 p.m., at a home in the 2500 block of 63rd Avenue.
According to a probable-cause declaration by an Oakland police officer, the victim had been involved in a dispute with Bryon Pointer, 29, over paperwork involved in sales of puppies.
Soon after that dispute, the victim followed Pointer to the 63rd Avenue home, where he “intentionally damaged” vehicles belonging to Pointer and Pointer’s sister, the declaration said. Authorities said he broke the windows of Pointer’s vehicle and slashed the tires on the sister’s vehicle.
After the victim got back in his own vehicle, Pointer then used a semi-automatic firearm to shoot at Johnson at least four times, hitting him in his back and his the right side of his neck. The victim managed to drive away to a West Oakland address before contacting police several hours later.
Officers who obtained a warrant to search Pointer’s home found a spent casing inside the home, which “would suggest Pointer moved the casing” in an attempt to conceal evidence, the declaration said.
Oakland police arrested Pointer on Sunday evening on suspicion of multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, attempting to conceal evidence, receipt of stolen property, and shooting into an inhabited dwelling or vehicle. Pointer, who listed his occupation as “student,” was booked early Monday into Santa Rita Jail.
The district attorney’s office charged Pointer on Monday with attempted murder and shooting into an occupied dwelling or vehicle. He is listed in custody on $270,000 bail and faced an initial arraignment Tuesday at Oakland’s Wiley Manuel courthouse, according to Alameda County jail records.
A San Francisco Fire Department spokesman contacted for comment said the incident was under investigation by Oakland police, directing any questions to them.
