WALNUT CREEK — A Concord woman was arrested on suspicion of DUI after police say she hit two pedestrians early Saturday, killing one and injuring the other.
The collision was reported at about 1:50 a.m. after a Walnut Creek police officer heard a crash near North Main and Pine streets, according to police.
Responding officers reported that the driver of a pickup truck hit two pedestrians before crashing into a cement pillar, police said, adding that the victims were walking on the east sidewalk of North Main Street when they were hit.
One of the people hit died at the scene, police said. The other victim was taken to a local hospital with what were described as major injuries.
The name of the person who died was not immediately released pending formal identification and notification of next of kin by the Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office.
After the crash, police said they arrested 28-year-old Briana Day on suspicion of driving under the influence causing injury, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. Jail records show Day was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility and was being held in lieu of $400,000 bail.
