ORINDA — A driver died Wednesday after their sport-utility lost control on Highway 24, authorities said.

Shortly after 6 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers received word of a possible collision on eastbound Hwy. 24 just west of the St. Stephens Drive involving a sport-utility vehicle, CHP Officer Damian Johnston said.

When officers arrived, they found an SUV that had driven off the road and struck a tree and provided aid to its solo driver who was suffering from major injuries.

Paramedics soon arrived and took the driver to a hospital, where they were pronounced dead, Officer Johnston said.

The driver’s identity was not immediately available from the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s division, pending next-of-kin notification.

No Sig-alert closing lanes for any investigation was issued. Anyone with information may call the CHP’s Contra Costa office at 925-646-4980.
