HAYWARD — A person was hit and killed by a BART train between the Bay Fair and South Hayward stations Monday afternoon, resulting in a nearly three-hour closure, authorities said.

Shortly after 3:50 p.m., a person entered the trackway near the transit system’s Hayward station and was hit, BART spokesperson Chris Filippi said. The person was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Service was stopped just before 4:10 p.m. in the Berryessa, Richmond and Millbrae directions. BART called the situation a “major medical emergency” around 4:25 p.m. and resumed service at 6:55 p.m. with limited delays.

Station employees turned back trains at the Bay Fair and South Hayward stations, with mutual-aid service provided by AC Transit’s No. 10 bus between the Bay Fair and Hayward stations, and the No. 99 bus between the Hayward and South Hayward stations. AC Transit accepted BART tickets as bus fare on those lines.

Last Tuesday, BART saw two major service disruptions, including one involving a 55-year-old man who apparently entered the trackway at the Hayward station and was found walking between the Bay Fair and Hayward stations. On Friday night, a bomb threat and recovery of a suspicious package at San Francisco International Airport led to that station’s closure.
