BERKELEY — A 45-year-old man died of injuries after a fire aboard a boat Tuesday off the city’s shoreline, authorities said.

In a statement Wednesday afternoon, police said Berkeley Fire Department firefighters responded to a call about a sailboat on fire east of Marina Boulevard by the Virginia Street extension road within McLaughlin Eastshore State Park.

When firefighters arrived, they learned that a male receiving lifesaving measures had been pulled from the water. Firefighters took over those measures from police, while other firefighters put out the boat fire.

The man was then taken to a trauma center, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity was not released, pending next-of-kin notification from the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office coroner’s bureau.

Police also said that an investigation into the fire and death was active and involved the coroner’s bureau and the arson and bomb investigations unit under Cal Fire’s office of the state fire marshal. More information will be made available at a later date, police added.
