With over 38,000 locations worldwide, McDonald’s is the largest fast food restaurant on the planet. There are McDonald’s restaurants located in over 100 countries and the franchise services over 69 million customers each and every day. McDonald’s was founded in 1940 by brothers Richard and Maurice McDonald in San Bernadino, California. The restaurant became a franchise in 1953, with the now famous Golden Arches logo coming to Phoenix, Arizona.
The brand began as a hamburger stand and to this day, the franchise is still widely known for their burgers. Their most famous burger is the Big Mac, which was first introduced to restaurants in the Greater Pittsburgh area in 1967 and then nationwide in 1968. Unlike your traditional hamburger, the Big Mac contains two burger patties with a third bun in the middle. It’s one of the brand’s many signature items, with that roster also including the Happy Meal, the McGriddle, the Egg McMuffin, the Chicken McNuggets and the McFlurry. McDonald’s fries are also extremely well received, with over nine million units of fries sold every single day. That’s a staggering 3,285,000,000 pounds of fries sold every year!
McDonald’s may have it’s tried and true items, but it also has some discontinued and seasonal favorites. The McRib is one of these items, which makes its rounds in the fall and is only a permanent menu item in Germany and Luxembourg. There’s also the Mulan Szechuan sauce which was a promotional special in 1998 that has since gained a cult following.
