OAKLAND — Just six months after he was charged with murder, an Oakland man has accepted a plea deal and three-year prison term in the shooting death of his girlfriend, court records show.
Soeut Sen, 59, pleaded no contest last month to involuntary manslaughter in the death of 38-year-old Liewhin Saephanh. In exchange, the murder charge was dropped, court records show.
Sen is scheduled to be formally sentenced in November, records show.
Saephanh was shot and killed Dec. 19, 2021, at a homeless camp where she was living on the 1700 block of East 12th Street in Oakland. Police said in court papers that witnesses said she and her boyfriend, “Sam,” were in an argument that ended with a gunshot, and that he told them Saephanh had accidentally shot herself.
Police identified “Sam” as Sen, and arrested him Wednesday at the same location as the shooting. During an interview, he denied being involved in the homicide but said he ran from the area when the cops showed up, according to a probable cause statement written by an Oakland detective.
Sen’s plea form says he will be eligible for a 50 percent sentence reduction with good behavior.
