Kapler’s protest was
a kind of patriotism

First, I’d like to thank letter-writer Richard Klokow for his service to our country. He was one of the brave men that fought in the Battle of Guadalcanal. But it seems he has forgotten that he also fought to defend our Constitution. His letter criticizing Gabe Kapler’s protestation during the national anthem (“Kapler’s actions are a betrayal of nation,” Page A6, June 30) points to that.

Our nation’s citizens thank every servicewoman and serviceman for defending American ideals, one of which is the right to protest peaceably. Gabe Kapler’s actions were not a form of disrespect, rather they were a kind of patriotism.

Men must speak out
on abortion rights

After the Supreme Court aborted our bodily autonomy, women gather in small pockets on the internet to share their communal despair.

Men, for their part, remain mostly silent on the issue. When they do speak up, they speak in complicated political tongues, lamenting the politicization of SCOTUS or what this means for democracy, focusing their disdain on “how did we get here” as if the issue was merely a segue into higher political discourse. And not the butchering of rights of an entire population.

Sometimes they trot out, a “this is bad” message because the horror of a 10-year-old girl carrying her rapist’s baby registers. But publicly extending unconditional abortion rights support seems to escape them.

Men, please hear me. We need your voice on this topic. The men who want me back in the kitchen aren’t silent, so why are you?

Article attacks bodily
autonomy with lies

Re. “For abortion opponents, ruling isn’t time to gloat,” Page A7, June 28:

Cynthia Allen claims that science and morality are on their side. That’s pure fiction. Whose morality is this? The church? Who gave them the right to force their religious “morality” on the rest of us? The United States joins the select three countries taking away this right from women. Nowhere does she even hint at providing universal health care, maternity care, free access to birth control, job security for mothers, universal preschool or maternity leave. These forced birthers care about controlling women, that’s it. Pregnancy and delivery carry a much higher risk than a safe abortion.

The fact is, this rogue Supreme Court has sentenced women, especially black and brown women, to sexual and reproductive servitude. This must end.

High court’s legitimacy
ruined by Republicans

It’s time to accept that Republicans have destroyed the legitimacy of the Supreme Court, with a corrupt group of justices deciding it is more fun to rule than to judge. Their recent decisions use preposterous arguments, making up rules no one has ever heard of before, in order to dictate their personal extreme views to the rest of us.

For example, why can’t we let women make their own medical decisions? Justice Alito quotes “eminent authority” Matthew Hale, a 17th-century judge, who was anti-abortion and also hanged women for witchcraft. What could go wrong by relying on such authorities?

Trump is trapped
by inferiority complex

I’m convinced that Donald Trump has an extreme inferiority complex.

Why else would he refuse to admit to himself and his fragile ego that he lost the presidential election? And this after losing over 60 court cases, and his own supporters trying to convince him on numerous occasions that there is no doubt that he lost. It also explains the attempt to stop the counting of electoral votes on Jan. 6, 2021.

He calls the various investigations concerning his activities “witch hunts,” and he’s right. And guess who the witch is.
