MOUNTAIN VIEW – Detectives on Wednesday were investigating the drowning death of a 9-year-old boy in Mountain View.
Around 4 p.m., city dispatchers received a call about a boy who had been found unresponsive in a pool at an apartment complex on the 1800 block of Ednamary Way, the Mountain View Police Department said in a news release.
While police officers were en route, dispatchers provided CPR instructions to the caller, police said. Officers and firefighters took over life-saving efforts when they arrived at the scene.
The boy was taken to an area hospital, where he died, police said. His identity will be released by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office once it has been confirmed and his next of kin is notified.
Detectives have since taken over the investigation.
“At this time, they are working to understand the circumstances around this tragic incident,” police said.
Every year, an estimated 3,960 unintentional drowning deaths occur in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Children ages 1 to 4 have the highest drowning rates and fatal drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death behind motor vehicle crashes for children ages 1 to 14.
