MILLBRAE — A still-unidentified man died after crashing a stolen vehicle into a tree on Interstate 280 Saturday afternoon, causing the car to burst into flames, police said.
The crash occurred a little after 4:20 p.m. Saturday, near the Trousdale Drive exit on I-280 southbound, according to the California Highway Patrol. The driver’s city of residence and age were not immediately known, and police say he is currently classified as a “John Doe.”
About an hour before the crash, the vehicle — a 2012 Volkswagen — had been stolen in a carjacking in San Bruno, authorities said. Police there are investigating that incident while the CHP looks into the crash.
Police say the Volkswagen caught fire so quickly that the man was unable to exit. Police and firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze.
The CHP has asked any witnesses to contact Officer D. Ocampo at 650-779-2730.
