UNION CITY — Two teens were hospitalized after a confrontation with two people ended with a shooting near a city intersection, authorities said.
Police said officers responded shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday to Whipple Road near A Street to reports of a shooting.
When officers arrived, they found five people, including 15- and 17-year-old boys, who had been shot at. The teens, who were the only people struck, were taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators later learned that the five were in a vehicle that had run out of gas and were trying to push the vehicle to a nearby gas station when two people they did not know confronted them. Soon after an exchange of words, the shooting happened. Police added that a motive was still under investigation.
Other officers closed off a section of Whipple and sent an alert just after 11 p.m. advising residents to avoid the area. The roadway reopened shortly after 2 a.m. Wednesday.
